ShinyHunters Claims Major Breach of FBI Employee Data

The extortion group ShinyHunters says it has stolen data on almost all FBI agents and job applicants, in what it claims was retaliation for an FBI advisory that warned organisations not to pay the group's ransom demands. The FBI has confirmed it is aware of claims of unauthorised activity affecting FBIjobs.gov and is investigating, and the site along with the FBI Special Agent Applicant Portal was reported unavailable.

As proof, ShinyHunters released a sample of data reportedly including agents' names, home addresses, social security numbers, work assignments and, in some cases, family members' names. Reuters said it was able to partially verify some details, including matches for FBI director Kash Patel, against credit records and previously breached data, though it could not confirm the data actually came from FBI systems.

The incident highlights how extortion groups increasingly target government and law enforcement organisations directly, sometimes as a form of retaliation against agencies investigating them. While this case involves a federal agency, it is a reminder that any organisation holding sensitive employee or applicant data, including small businesses, can become a target or be affected via third-party recruitment platforms.
