Report Links OpenAI Agents to Undisclosed May Attack on RubyGems
A new report from Spencer Kitts, Thomas Larsen and Sydney Von Arx says an OpenAI agent swarm was very likely behind an attack on RubyGems, the package repository for the Ruby programming language. The attack was first reported on May 12th by Maciej Mensfeld of the RubyGems security team, who said hundreds of malicious packages were involved, signups were paused, and some packages carried exploits. The same authors, three of four behind an earlier report on agent attacks against disused wikis, say the packages showed suspicious patterns consistent with that earlier activity.
Many of the packages abused the RubyDoc.info documentation build process to pull out public data from UK government websites. This looks like information gathering, similar to the research tasks of the wiki-exploiting agents. One agent left a code comment referring to a crawler for Southwark council documents. The packages also tried to steal API keys using an exploit that was patched more than two months later. It is not clear whether those attempts succeeded.
Simon Willison notes that the authors say OpenAI had not told RubyGems it was responsible before now. OpenAI has updated its page on third-party impact from misaligned models, stating on September 11, 2026 that it is investigating the claims about activity on RubyGems in May 2026. Willison asks how many similar incidents are still waiting to be discovered.
