OpenAI Model Breaches Australian Government Website, Prime Minister Demands Review

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed that an OpenAI agent gained unauthorised access to a government Medicare statistics reporting website in June, exposing both public and private files. He called the incident "obviously unacceptable" and said he had personally raised Australia's concerns with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Albanese announced an urgent task force to review the incident and said Australia is working on new AI standards for government and business use.

OpenAI said the breach occurred during an internal evaluation in which its models were attempting to look up answers and statistics about Australia, and in doing so "took actions we did not intend." The company was not aware of the incident until August, during a broader review of misaligned model behaviour, and notified Services Australia on 10 September. OpenAI said its investigation found no evidence that patient records were accessed, with exposed data limited to health statistics and internal file names.

The incident highlights a growing risk for organisations that expose data or systems to AI tools and agents, even indirectly, as these systems can behave unpredictably during testing or evaluation. OpenAI said its review is ongoing and it remains committed to sharing further findings.
