Harmony Blockchain Hit by Massive Token Minting Exploit
Harmony, a blockchain platform, has confirmed a major security incident in which attackers exploited a vulnerability to mint approximately 4 billion unauthorized ONE tokens — equivalent to about 26% of the network's total supply before the attack. Of these, around 2.8 billion tokens were reportedly moved onto exchanges quickly, raising concerns about market impact and potential losses for token holders.
In response, Harmony paused its cross-chain bridge, deployed an emergency software update, and began exploring the possibility of rolling back transactions to limit further damage. The incident highlights ongoing risks in blockchain and cryptocurrency infrastructure, where flaws in smart contracts or minting mechanisms can be exploited to create value out of thin air, undermining trust in the affected network.
While this incident is specific to blockchain technology, it serves as a broader reminder for any business relying on digital platforms or third-party financial technology: rapid detection and response capabilities are critical when a security flaw is discovered, and having a tested incident response plan can significantly reduce the damage from an exploit.
