Harmony Blockchain Hit by $Billions Exploit, Token Crashes 40%
Harmony Protocol, a Layer-1 blockchain network, confirmed on Wednesday that it had suffered a serious security exploit. Attackers found a way to mint 4 billion of the network's native ONE tokens without authorization, then rapidly moved almost all of them to cryptocurrency exchanges to sell.
The sudden flood of tokens onto the market caused the ONE token's price to crash by 40% within a short period, wiping out significant value for legitimate holders. This type of attack, where a flaw in a blockchain's code allows unauthorized creation of new currency units, is a recurring risk in the cryptocurrency and decentralised finance (DeFi) space.
While this incident targeted a blockchain protocol rather than a traditional business, it's a useful reminder for any Australian small business dealing in cryptocurrency, accepting digital payments, or partnering with blockchain-based platforms. Exploits like this can happen with little warning and cause rapid financial loss, underscoring the importance of due diligence before holding or transacting in digital assets.
