FBI Announces Another Arrest Linked to ShinyHunters After Breach of Its Jobs Site
The FBI has arrested another person allegedly connected to the ShinyHunters cybercriminal group. FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrest on Friday, saying agents are working to dismantle the group and pursue new leads. The bureau did not provide details, but The New York Times reported that the arrest took place in Pennsylvania and involved a Canadian national.
At least two other suspected members have been detained over the last two weeks. Reuters reported that Saif al-Din Khader was arrested in Jordan on September 28, and that he allegedly agreed to cooperate with law enforcement to help locate other members. The FBI and the Dutch National Police also announced the arrest of Pepijn van der Stap, another alleged member.
The arrests follow the group's takeover and defacement of the FBIjobs.gov domain, during which it stole sensitive data on nearly every FBI employee. The group shared samples with news outlets, and the data reportedly included medical records, home addresses, phone numbers and areas of work. Thousands of records about local police officers on FBI task forces were also exposed. The FBI sent an internal memo warning staff about the potential danger to them and their families.
