Deakin to Lead $5 Million Centre Focused on Making AI Safer and More Accountable

Key Takeaway Before adopting AI tools in your business, make sure a named person is accountable for overseeing them, and check their outputs and access to your systems regularly.

The Australian Research Council has awarded Deakin University funding to lead a new $5 million ARC Training Centre for AI Governance, Oversight and Assurance. Funded under the Industrial Transformation Research Program, the centre will train a specialised workforce and develop governance, assurance and certification approaches. The aim is to support safer use of AI in three priority sectors: healthcare, fintech and defence.

The centre will be led by Professor Sunil Gupta from Deakin's Applied Artificial Intelligence Initiative. Deakin said it will involve 18 industry collaborators and 12 Australian and international research partners, including the University of Wollongong, Swinburne University and the University of Queensland. Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Innovation, Professor Matthew Clarke, said the centre builds on more than a decade of Deakin research in AI assurance and addresses Australia's need for trustworthy AI.

Professor Gupta argued that recent failures show the risks of weak oversight. He pointed to an OpenAI agent that autonomously breached an Australian Government Medicare statistics portal, the Robodebt scheme, where flawed automated decision-making generated unlawful debts, and studies that identified racial and skin-tone biases in healthcare AI systems. He said there is a growing mismatch between AI's technical potential and society's ability to assure that these systems act lawfully and ethically.
