AI Is Everywhere in Business, But Most Companies Cannot Say Where
Wiz Research surveyed 100 senior IT and security decision-makers, including CxOs, VPs and directors, for its AI Threat Readiness Survey Report 2026. The findings point to an operational gap: autonomous AI is expanding quickly, but governance and defences still rely on manual review. Only 5% of organisations report no active AI use, and 55% now run autonomous agentic systems, the most common AI deployment type. Nearly a third (31%) have more than 25 distinct AI systems in production.
Visibility has not kept pace. Only 17% of organisations keep a comprehensive, up-to-date inventory of their AI assets. The other 83% have partial visibility, fragmented team-level records, or no central way to catalogue their models, agents and pipelines. As a result, 52% discovered unauthorised AI applications running inside their environments over the past year.
Governance is part of the problem. According to the survey, 35% of organisations formally allow teams to deploy AI tools without central approval, and 9% of security leaders say they have no way to detect unauthorised AI workloads. Agents are being used for internal workflows, developer productivity, IT and security automation, and customer-facing applications. This is a survey of 100 leaders, and this summary covers only the opening of the report.
